ZBrush 2021 introduces a Dynamics system along with Controlled Cloth Sculpting and a revisiting of our Dynamic Subdivision feature. We’ve also added new features to ZModeler, as well as introducing iMage 3D support to ZBrush and giving it the ability to open native-format files created by ZBrushCoreMini.
The ZBrush engine itself has also been enhanced, finding ways to improve performance across the board. You will find that ZBrush 2021 sculpts more fluidly, as well as taking less time to perform other operations such as DynaMesh.

Enhance your sculpting with a Dynamics system that allows any surface to be contracted, expanded, inflated or draped with gravity. Use masking to pin a portion of the mesh to create a point of interest or use a mask to create a unique interaction that can allow the surface to be rolled on itself. Create realistic cloth folds - even on a low resolution plane. Place your mesh, turn on the collision volume and any desired controls, then watch as ZBrush drapes the cloth mesh over any other visible meshes.

Special brushes have been introduced which use the Dynamics engine to give unique capabilities for interacting with the cloth surface. As examples, you can choose where folds will lay or simply grab the geometry to move it freely in the work space and create folds in real-time. The ClothTwister brush simulates twisted cloth. ClothWind allows directional movement. ClothPinchTrails will create a seam with pinched cloth wherever your brush stroke takes place on the surface.
Dynamic Subdiv Revisited
Dynamic Subdiv provides a working preview of your subdivision levels without actually increasing the base polygon count. This feature is now taken a step further by allowing you to add an adjustable thickness to any single piece of planar geometry.
A piece of geometry can also be added to each polygon as a completely interactive instance. Select from the library of presets to make a surface look like canvas or denim jeans. Even select a piece of armor to create repeatable chainmail.

Snapshot3d Additions
PolyGrouping, Color, and Segments
SnapShot3D will now transfer PolyGroups and color from the original texture to the generated mesh. This functionality allows for easy isolation of parts. When generating silhouettes of garments, color can be applied to the areas where holes would be needed to create an outfit. These areas can then quickly be hidden and deleted for processing with Dynamics to generate clothing.
Segments can now also be added to the SnapShot3D mesh by using the SpotLight dial.

Extrude Edge
It’s never been easier to build a plane up into what you imagine or construct a completely new piece of geometry that fits into an existing sculpt. The new Edge Extrude feature gives you the ability to build with one edge, multiple edges, complete edge loops and/or polyloops -- with interactive edge snapping. Not only can you extrude an edge to snap to the adjacent face but you can enable SnapToSurface to allow the new edges to snap to an underlying surface.

Equidistant Inset
With Equidistant Inset you can inset a single polygon or region of polygons and all newly created topology will be equidistant from the existing topology. The result is a perfect new set of polygons.

Pixologic ZBrush is a digital sculpting tool that combines 3D/2.5D modeling, texturing and painting. It uses a proprietary "pixol" technology which stores lighting, color, material, orientation and depth information for the points making up all objects on the screen. The main difference between ZBrush and more traditional modeling packages is that it is more akin to traditional sculpting.
ZBrush is used for creating "high-resolution" models (able to reach 40+ million polygons) for use in movies, games, and animations, by companies ranging from ILM[1][2] and Weta Digital,[3] to Epic Games and Electronic Arts.[4] ZBrush uses dynamic levels of resolution to allow sculptors to make global or local changes to their models. ZBrush is most known for being able to sculpt medium- to high-frequency details that were traditionally painted in bump maps. The resulting mesh details can then be exported as normal maps to be used on a low poly version of that same model. They can also be exported as a displacement map, although, in that case, the lower poly version generally requires more resolution. Or, once completed, the 3D model can be projected onto the background, becoming a 2.5D image (upon which further effects can be applied). Work can then begin on another 3D model which can be used in the same scene. This feature lets users work within complicated scenes without a heavy processor overhead.
ZBrush was developed by the company Pixologic Inc, founded by Ofer Alon (also known by the alias "Pixolator") and Jack Rimokh.[5] The software was presented in 1999 at SIGGRAPH.[6] The demo version, 1.55, was released in 2003,[7] and version 3.1 was released in 2007.[8] ZBrush 4 for Windows and Mac systems was announced on April 21, 2009 for an August release,[9] but was later postponed.[10] Version 3.5 was made available in September the same year, and includes some of the newer features initially intended for ZBrush 4.[11]
Through GoZ ("Go ZBrush"), available starting in Version 4, ZBrush offers integration with other 3D graphics programs such as Autodesk Maya, Autodesk 3ds Max, Cinema 4D, LightWave 3D, Poser Pro, Daz Studio, EIAS, Modo[12] and Blender.
ZBrush was purchased by the software company Maxon in January 2022. Since then, ZBrush has been added to the company's Maxon One subscription service. In addition, the Redshift renderer was integrated into ZBrush.[13][14]
Pixol[edit]
Like a pixel, each "pixol" contains information on X and Y position and color values. Additionally, it contains information on depth (or Z position), orientation and material. ZBrush-related files store pixol information, but when these maps are exported (e.g., to JPEG or PNG formats) they are flattened and the pixol data is lost. This technique is similar in concept to a voxel, another kind of 3D pixel.

ZBrush comes with many features[15] to aid in the sculpting of models and meshes.
3D Brushes[edit]
The initial download of ZBrush comes with thirty 3D sculpting brushes, and more are available for download. Each brush offers unique attributes while allowing general control over hardness, intensity, and size. Alphas, which are used to create a specific pattern or shape, and textures are also editable features of the brushes.
Polypaint[edit]
Polypainting allows users to paint on an object's surface without the need to first assign a texture map by adding color directly to the polygons.
Illustration[edit]
ZBrush also gives the ability to sculpt in 2.5D and comes with several brushes for that purpose. A pixol put down when sculpting or illustrating in 2.5D contains information on its own color, depth, material, position and lighting information.
Transpose[edit]
ZBrush also has a feature that is similar to skeletal animation in other 3D programs. The transpose feature allows a user to isolate a part of the model and pose it without the need of skeletal rigging.[16]
ZSpheres[edit]
A user can create a base mesh with uniform topology and then convert it into a sculptable model by starting out with a simple sphere and extracting more "ZSpheres", until the basic shape of the desired model is created.

Introduced in ZBrush 3.2 OS X, GoZ automates setting up shading networks for normal, displacement, and texture maps of the 3D models in GoZ-enabled applications. Upon sending the mesh back to ZBrush, GoZ will automatically remap the existing high-resolution details to the incoming mesh.[12] GoZ will take care of operations such as correcting points & polygons order. The updated mesh is immediately ready for further detailing, map extractions, and transferring to any other GoZ-enabled application.[17]
Best Preview Render[edit]
Also included is a full render suite known as Best Preview Render, which allows use of full 360° environment maps to light scenes using HDRI images. BPR includes a new light manipulation system called LightCaps. With it, one can not only adjust how the lights in the scene are placed around the model, but also generate environments based on it for HDRI rendering later on. It also allows for material adjustments in real-time. Material properties such as subsurface scattering are supported as are environmental and scan-line reflections. BPR also includes a set of built-in filters that can be used in real time to create dramatic effects and corrections without even touching another photo-manipulation program.[18]
DynaMesh[edit]
This allows ZBrush to quickly generate a new model with uniform polygon distribution, to improve the topology of models and eliminate polygon stretching.[19]
Fibermesh[edit]
Fibermesh is a feature that allows users to grow polygon fibers out of their models or to make various botanical items. It is also a way to edit and manipulate large amounts of polygons at once with Groom brushes.[20]
ZRemesher[edit]
It is an automatic retopology system previously called QRemesher that creates a new topology based on the original mesh. The new topology is generally more clean and uniform. This is a process that also helps to reduce or increase the polygon count. This process can also be guided by the user to make the new topology follow curves in the model and retain more detail in specified areas.[21]
Shadowbox[edit]
Shadowbox allows the user to draw a rough silhouette of what they want to model, onto the inside of a virtual box. In real-time, any changes to the drawings are applied to a 3D model, upon which further details can be applied. The feature can best be utilized for hard surface modeling.[22]

ZBrush 2023.2 includes a new tool as well as valuable updates to existing ones:
Anchors Brush: provides an intuitive new way to deform meshes. It works by applying anchors onto a mesh while allowing for a variety of actions to be performed with or without symmetry. Some actions include Inflate, Twist, Move and Rotate.Spotlight Enhancements: The Spotlight feature receives updated sliders providing increased control over the impact of alphas on surfaces. Mid-Value and Blur sliders join the already robust feature set. Spotlight provides artists with the ability to load, manipulate and transfer color and sculptural detail to the surfaces of ZBrush models.Morph Brush Enhancement: The Morph Brush is expanded to include compatibility with Undo History. Installation
INSTALLING ZBRUSH
Please follow these steps to install ZBrush on your computer. Whether you are upgrading an existing copy of ZBrush or installing it for the first time, these steps are the same.
The screenshots displayed in this document are the ones corresponding to the Windows version but the macOS installer has the same interface and options.
Important!It is important that you be logged into the computer under an Administrator account when installing and activating ZBrush. After activation, any user on the computer will be able to run ZBrush.
Many antivirus programs are known to interfere with successful installation and/or activation. This includes (but is not limited to) Windows Defender, McAfee® and Norton®. It is recommended to temporarily disable or suspend your antivirus software before installing ZBrush. You may enable it again after activating ZBrush. (Your firewall typically does not matter and can be ignored unless it blocks ZBrush from communicating with the Pixologic servers when activating.)
Localization note:
The screenshots have been taken with the English language version of the installer application. If you are using another language, the screens will read differently from what is shown here but the steps will be identical.

The screenshots in the documentation may vary slightly from what you have in your installer or in the activation process. The ZBrush version or illustrations may vary, but the process remains the same.
LAUNCHING THE INSTALLER AND LANGUAGE SELECTION
On Windows, double-click on the downloaded ZBrush installer to launch it. From this point it may take a short time for the installer to unpack itself to memory and continue to the next screen. Please be patient. You should also see a UAC (User Account Control) warning. Click “Yes” to continue.
On macOS, double-click the downloaded DMG file to mount it. This will usually open a window that shows the installer application. If no window opens automatically, locate the ZBrush installer in the Devices section of your Finder window. Open that to locate the installer application. Double-click the installer application to launch it. From this point it may take a minute or two for the installer to unpack itself to memory and continue to the next screen. You will also be asked for your macOS login user name and password.
The installer’s first step will be to ask which language you prefer to use during the setup process. This language will also be set as the default language for ZBrush itself. Click in the dropdown menu to select the language of your choice, then click OK to start the installation process.
Important!Note:
After clicking OK, the only way to change the installer language choice is to quit the installer and restart it. You can change the ZBrush language at any time through the Preferences >> Language sub-palette in ZBrush itself.
WELCOME SCREEN!
The Welcome screen is only informative. Press the “Next” button to continue.
LICENSE AGREEMENT
Please read the ZBrush End User License Agreement. By installing ZBrush, you agree to rules and conditions concerning its use. This is a legally binding agreement.
If you agree, click the “I accept the agreement” radio button and then press the “Next” button.
If you do not agree, the installation will be cancelled. In other words, installing and running ZBrush constitutes your legal agreement to the terms and conditions set forth by the EULA.
CHOOSE YOUR INSTALLATION PATH
The installer specifies a default path for where ZBrush will be installed. On Windows, ZBrush will be installed in the C:\Program Files\Pixologic folder. On macOS, it will be installed in Applications. If you are satisfied with the default location, simply click the “Next” button.
If you wish to install ZBrush to a different location, click the yellow folder icon. This will allow you to browse your hard drive and select an installation folder of your choice. When done, press the “Next” button.
CHOOSE THE COMPONENTS TO INSTALL
The ZBrush installer lets you choose which items you wish to have installed. While ZBrush itself will always be installed, you may opt out of the software’s documentation and/or official plugins. It is recommended to use the default option and install all components, but you may uncheck any components that you wish to skip. When done, press the “Next” button.
Important!Note:
It is recommended to install all components. However, if you skip any items now and later decide you would like them you can run the installer again. Doing so will let you modify your existing ZBrush installation, changing the installed components.
ZBRUSH IS READY TO BE INSTALLED
The installer now informs you that it is ready to install ZBrush.
Press “Next” to start the actual installation process.
INSTALL IN PROGRESS
The installer performs its tasks. Be aware that installation may take several minutes, during which your computer can become slow or unresponsive. It is recommended to not multi-task while the installation completes.
During this time it will display a slide show of various images created using ZBrush. After a few minutes, the installer will advance to the next screen automatically.
LAST STEP BEFORE LAUNCHING ZBRUSH
The installer now displays its final page with options for what you would like to have happen when the installer closes. You may view the “Documentation,” open the “ZClassroom” to watch the many video tutorials for ZBrush, and of course you may launch ZBrush itself.
Use the check boxes to select the items you wish to open and then click the “Finish” button. The installer will close and any items that you had selected will be opened.

Mask Region
Mask Region allows you to draw a mask outline and ZBrush will fill it at the touch of a button. The function can even cope with multiple regions. For extra control, regions can be marked prior to filling.

ZRemesher 4.0
The latest version of ZRemesher bring speed and other improvements. The addition of caching means that settings can be altered and a new remesh calculated quickly. Slime Bridge

Dynamic Symmetry
Dynamic Symmetry allows you to set symmetry axes based on the Gizmo position. An enhancement to the Local Symmetry feature, you can now move, scale or rotate your model as well as move the Gizmo position and symmetry will be maintained.

UV Map : Unwrap
The UV Map sub-palette has a new section for unwrapping the model. The addition of Creases being used for seams creation makes it even easier to unwrap your models inside ZBrush.

WHAT’S NEW - ZBrush 2024
The latest version features an updated Anchors Brush system which provides an intuitive way to deform meshes by applying anchors onto a mesh while allowing for actions to be performed. The Knife Brushes gain increased design dexterity with a Split to Parts feature set allowing parts to be cut off and retained. Insert Mesh brushes are now compatible with Stroke menu options providing a wild range of visual possibilities. Designing surface details and adding secondary elements to models is now more easily achieved with the Repeat to Similar functionality, and the new DragStamp stroke option helps to advance surface details while buttons like Crease UnMasked and Uncrease UnMasked set the stage for dynamic edge control. The Gizmo and Transpose functions include topology masking for both tools while allowing snapping on perfectly masked areas. The Gizmo is now capable of snapping to the center of masked regions, and the addition of Cinema 4D noises provide robust methods for detailing assets. ZBrush provides access to diverse workflows and limitless creative possibilities.

Base Mesh Generation
As with anything else in life, where you can go is usually determined by where you begin. Having a great finished model requires a quality base mesh. ZBrush provides an arsenal of tools to assist with this task, ensuring that no matter what you have in mind, there is a way to get the perfect base to then take to the next level. MESH DETAILINGWhether created in ZBrush or imported from elsewhere, once you have your base mesh it is time to start detailing. ZBrush features a robust suite of tools to accomplish this. Those listed below are just the tip of the iceberg.

3D Painting & Texturing
PolyPaint
Because ZBrush works with tens of millions of polygons in real-time, you can paint directly on the surface of the model without first assigning a texture map or UV’s. This offers significant advantages compared to a standard workflow. The resolution of the texture map does not need to be decided in advance. This is particularly valuable if you find you need more detailing on an area than you thought you would. Instead of repainting a new, larger texture map you can simply transfer the existing surface detail to that larger map without any reworking. You don’t even need to do UV unwrapping before you begin this painting. In fact, thanks to the way that ZBrush can project details (both sculpted and painted) from one model to another you can have a fully painted model before you even have a finalized animation mesh. Instead, you can copy everything to the final base mesh once it has been signed off on.

UV Master
In order create or use a texture map, a model first needs UV’s. These are 2D coordinates that tell all 3D applications how to apply a texture to your model. With most programs, creating those UV’s has been a time consuming challenge that requires a high level of technical expertise and has little room for creativity. With UV Master you are able to create very efficient UV’s for your model – in most cases with a single click. If you need more control over this automatic process there are features that refine where seams will be placed or increase the amount of pixel space given to certain regions of your model. It’s both intuitive and fast, letting you get back to being creative with minimal fuss.

Now used by the likes of Electronic Arts, ILM, and Epic Games, it has become the industry leader for asset creation in games, films, and visualisation. If you’ve watched The Avengers, Iron Man, Avatar, or Pacific Rim, then you’ll have seen what ZBrush can do in artists' hands.This established sculpting tool has been fine-tuned over the course of many development cycles, and you can learn more about its general features in our ZBrush tutorials list. This has brought a top-quality renderer into the main ZBrush workflow.Cons:❌ Steep learning curve ZBrush is not the easiest package to understand, and, for most people, it will take a huge amount of learning and intentionality to really master the program.❌ Expensive When something like Sculptris is available for free, it can be difficult to justify the expense of ZBrush, especially if you're just a hobbyist.❌ Full Redshift needs a subscription Not only is ZBrush pretty expensive, but if you want to access Redshift rendering capabilities then you'll need to shed out even more money.ZBrush: must know tools and featuresZBrush includes a range of incredible sculpting tools, including push, pull, pinch, and smooth. Alongside these staple tools, ZBrush also contains a set of incredible secondary tools that help with the sculpting process. The addition of the Redshift renderer in version 2023 has given ZBrush a world-class renderer to add to the mix. (Image credit: Future)The sculpting tools in ZBrush are driven by a variety of different brushes. Each individual brush has its own purpose and unique properties. These brushes include smooth, clip, curve, groom, pen, and a range of others. One of the main tasks for the artist is to pick the right brush for the right task. An artist must know its tools to get the most out of the software.One of the best brushes to use for modifying facial features is the Move brush. Once a face has been created with all its features in place, an artist can use this brush to move sections of the face in a specific direction. Introducing asymetrical anomalies on faces is a quick-fire way to inject realism and believability into character's faces.It is also possible to perform hard surface sculpting using purpose-built brushes, including planar, trim, and polish brushes. Maxon, the publisher of ZBrush, has a dedicated resources page on its ZBrush website that is a must-visit.Advanced users are able to create their own brushes by adjusting brush settings. This helps to speed up an artist's workflow, especially for common tasks that an artist has to attend to on a regular basis. Retopologising geometry is vital for maintaining a clean mesh that is ready for rendering as well as animation. The result of the remeshing process is a new and clean mesh.The ZRemesher tool does a fantastic job of automatically generating the new mesh with the default settings, but it is also possible to adjust these settings to get a more user-defined result. When the model is first remeshed, ZBrush creates a cache, which greatly speeds up the time required for subsequent remeshing. ZRemesher includes a 'Retry' button, which lets users repeat the remeshing process but with different settings each time. This avoids needing to undo any operations and ensures a more non-destructive and streamlined workflow.Without this automatic tool, artists would have to carry out the laborious manual task of cleaning up the mesh. Having an automated process saves artists a significant amount of time and enables them to focus more on their creative processes.ZSpheresUsing ZSpheres in ZBrush is a quick and easy way to build models using primitive shapes that can then be sculpted. (Image credit: Glen Southern)ZSpheres have been around in ZBrush for nearly two decades and continue to be a unique tool to ZBrush. Alternative options have since become available, but there are still occasions when ZSpheres should be the go-to tool, especially when creating base mesh structures and general overall forms. Having created a simple form, such as a basic armature, users can then quickly transform this into something more complex. The process involves converting the ZSpheres into a sculptable mesh using the Make Adaptive Skin function. This can then be edited inside the Sculpting mode and its associated brushes. ZSpheres should therefore be viewed as a fantastic feature that lets artists block out the basics of their designs and get moving quickly without having to worry about intricate detail. Redshift RendererThe excellent Redshift rendering is now available in the latest version of ZBrush. (Image credit: Future)The inclusion of Redshift into ZBrush 2023 is the inevitable fruit of Maxon’s acquisition of Redshift in 2019 and ZBrush in 2022. It's a good addition to ZBrush that many pro and hobbyists will love using.You might ask why including Redshift is so important. ZBrush artists were previously limited to Best Preview Renders (BPR), which lacked the level of realism and functionality required for production-quality output. The integration of Redshift into ZBrush allows artists to perform high-quality rendering within the ZBrush workflow, eliminating the need to export work to a third-party renderer.One of the best things about Redshift in ZBrush is the drag-and-drop material capability. Standard and MatCap materials are still available, but if you’re after off-the-shelf delivery of top-quality production-ready materials, then Redshift delivers. Artists will also love the Redshift sliders, which make it simple and straight-forward to customise results. Getting top-quality rendering into the hands of users ushers in a new era for ZBrush.As a large majority of ZBrush users are creating characters, sub-surface scattering capabilities are absolutely paramount. Maxon knows this and has ensured this functionality is front and centre.But before you think this sounds like the best news ever, it bears noting that subscribers only get access to the CPU version by default. For this, artists get digital sculpting and painting tools as well as Redschift CPU. To gain access to ZBrush as well as a range of other Maxon tools, including Redshift GPU and Cinema 4D, you'll have to upgrade to the Maxon One package. This equates to £99.89 per month and £1198.80 per year.Maxon offers a 14-day free trial of Maxon One, which gives users access to all products, including ZBrush and offers regular updates and content drops of resources. Visit the Maxon website for more details on downloads and pricing.For beginners I would suggest using ZBrush Core, this is a paired back edition of the software that features the 'core' tools and features and is ideal to learn the ropes and whether ZBrush is right for you. For example, if you just want ZBrush to create models for 3D printing this is the best option. ZBrush Core is $9.95 £9 a month. Memory 16GB RAMZBrush runs on Windows and MacOS, which is great for artists who either move between the two platforms or for those not wanting to be tied down to just one operating system. ZBrush isn't the most CPU-intensive application available, but the more complex your models are, the more capable your hardware will need to be. Fast processors with multiple cores are ideal because ZBrush is only CPU-based. I'd recommend reading our best laptops for 3D modelling guide or the new line of Apple MacBook M3 laptops.There is a new ZBrush for iPad app planned for release this year. This bespoke tablet edition of the digital sculpting software was announced at ZBrush Summit 2023. This could be an interesting release, streamlined for speed and with the inclusion of gesture support.In terms of memory, 4GB RAM would be the absolute minimum and generally most decent laptops begin at 8GB, but in reality, users will want to aim for 16GB to handle most models, especially the more complex ones. For storage, an SSD is not absolutely essential, but it will massively help ZBrush when its writing large numbers of temporary files, something it does to ensure fast performance. ZBrush: frequent questionsIs ZBrush free?There is no free version of ZBrush, but Maxon does offer a 14-day free trial of Maxon One, which gives users access to all products, including ZBrush. Visit the Maxon website for more details on downloads and pricing.Why is ZBrush so popular?Not only does ZBrush contain industry-leading, ground-breaking tools that have set it apart from anyone else, but it has also benefited from not having a huge amount of direct and focused competition.
Most 3D applications include some element of digital sculpting, but these tools are only a small part of their overall offering. ZBrush on the other hand has devoted almost all its energies to being the best sculpting tool around. Is ZBrush good for beginners?ZBrush is far from the easiest package to use. Users who have prior experience with physical sculpting and working with their hands will find it easier to pick up the tools, but linking creativity and technical know-how is not always the easiest thing to do. A lot of ZBrush users talk about the benefits of performing daily sculpts in ZBrush during formative weeks and months.Are there good alternatives to ZBrush?There are a number of free and paid-for ZBrush alternatives that can do similar things to Maxon and Pixologic's app, but in reality nothing quite compares to ZBrush. Below are my five picks of ZBrush alternatives if you do want to try something different.
1. 3D Coat is a complex and feature-laden software that offers organic and hard surface sculpting.
2. Blender offers a good sculpting experience, is free and offers rigging, video editing, simulation and more.
3. Mudbox is a 3D sculpting and painting tool in the same vein as ZBrush, but at £12 a month is much cheaper.
